An exploration of Sanskrit and chanting through Primary Series and the Opening & Closing Chants of Ashtanga Yoga
The practice of Ashtanga Yoga is immersed in Sanskrit. We begin with an invocation, count the postures in Sanskrit, and conclude with a closing chant. Yet many practitioners spend years engaging these sounds before having an opportunity to explore their meaning and context.
Join Aimee Echo for a led Primary Series followed by a three-hour exploration of Sanskrit, Vedic chanting, and the Opening & Closing Chants of Ashtanga Yoga.
Together we will investigate the language, symbolism, and traditional context of these familiar verses while developing a deeper understanding of the role of sound, recitation, and chanting within practice.
No previous experience with Sanskrit is required.

About Amy
Aimee Echo began her career not as a Yoga teacher but as a singer and songwriter. She has recorded several albums, toured extensively with her band theSTART, and performed guest vocals for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Garbage, Teddybears, and so many more.
She took her first step into a Yoga class in Los Angeles in 1999.
Guided first by Ashtanga Yoga teachers Noah Williams and Kiki Flynn, she developed a daily Mysore-style practice and became a devoted yoga student. She made her first journey to India in 2007 and has since been a dedicated student of R. Sharath Jois. She regularly returns to India for intensive study and is Authorized to teach at Level 2.
An avid philosophy student, she began an ongoing study of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and with long-time TKV Desikachar student Chase Bossart in 2015. Under his guidance, she continues in weekly yoga meditation & Yoga Sutras classes. Over the years, she has also studied Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Rahasya, Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Ramayana with Chase.
Aimee is the owner and primary teacher at Ashtanga Yoga Long Beach. She is the only KPJAYI Authorized Ashtanga Yoga teacher in Long Beach, CA.
